When you buy an SA registered vehicle, such as a car, trailer, caravan or motorbike, you must transfer the registration within 14 days.
You can't transfer a vehicle if it's unregistered or has other requirements. Go to other types of transfers for more information.
Transfer online
Log in to mySAGOV account using a browser - not the mobile app. Select Start now.
You'll need the:
- plate number
- seller’s SA driver’s licence or client number
- seller’s last name or organisation name.
Fees
You will need to pay:
- a $33 transfer fee
- stamp duty — Calculate stamp duty to find out how much it will be or if there may be an exemption.
Late fee
If you don't transfer the registration within 14 days, you may have to pay a late transfer fee of $108.
Reasons you can't transfer online
Online transfer is not available if:
- you're eligible for a registration concession and would like to apply it to the vehicle – see concessions for registration
- the vehicle has special plates or new number plates are required
- the vehicle is conditionally registered
- it's a heavy vehicle or trailer that is 3 years or older from the date of manufacture and requires a change of ownership inspection
- it’s a trailer or caravan that has never been issued a chassis or vehicle identification number.
